Woman Goes Through Late Mom’s Phone, Can’t Cope With What She Finds
|A woman from Texas was left a “wreck” after watching a video captured on her late mom’s phone.
Shelby Curry, 22, discovered the footage a week after her mom, Robin Wingfield Curry, passed away in November this year, and she had no clue it existed.
The short clip, originally recorded on July 31, 2022, starts with Robin explaining a “precious family secret”—a technique for removing bitterness from cucumbers. “She said when you peel a cucumber, cut one of the ends off—just when you start to see seeds—then rub the ends together. Supposedly, my mom, grandma, and great grandma believed it would take the bitterness out,” Shelby told Newsweek.
What began as a lighthearted discovery quickly turned emotional when Robin addressed her children directly in the video: “I love you, Shel, I love you, T [Shelby’s brother],” towards the end of the clip. “At that point, I just lost it. I sat and rewatched it a million times and just sobbed,” Shelby said.
Robin’s daughter shared the 14-second clip on TikTok, which has been viewed 2.8 million times and garnered over 3,000 comments from other users who were heartbroken after watching it. “I never even knew your mom and I just started crying at this,” one wrote.
“This video captures my mom to a tee,” Shelby told Newsweek. “She was the loudest, brightest, goofiest, and most caring person. She always wanted everyone around her to be laughing and happy.”
Robin’s unique personality shone even in her final wishes: to be cremated and mixed with glitter. “She joked that you can never get rid of glitter, so she would always be around. That’s exactly what we did,” Shelby shared.
When Robin’s ashes were scattered, Shelby said she felt a profound sense of peace: “There was something about the glitter flying everywhere that made me feel like she was there telling me everything was going to be just fine. Every time I see glitter, something neon, or something shiny, I get to think of my mom and play this video in my head.”
Reflecting on the video’s message, Shelby believes her mom’s spirit and wisdom continue to inspire. “She was unapologetically her and didn’t care what anyone thought; that’s exactly what’s she’s saying in this video. Live a life that you love and that makes you happy. Be unapologetically you. Love one another and be there for one another no matter what,” she said.
