‘GMA’ Icon Undergoes Surgery After Serious Diving Accident

Lara Spencer recently went under the knife — not once, but twice.
On Wednesday, December 11, the Good Morning America anchor, 55, shared via Instagram that she underwent surgery on both her feet, and posted two photos: the first one was a selfie from the hospital with her doctor, and the second one was a photo of her feet, which were heavily bandaged in gauze and wrapped in a boot.
The ABC mainstay explained that her right foot required a simple operation since she already had surgery on it last year for a torn plantar plate and ligament.
“My right foot was easy — just had the plate removed from last year’s surgery,” she wrote in her caption.
However, the TV personality noted that the left foot required a more complex procedure as her surgeon was treating a severe diving injury she had sustained as a college athlete. Spencer was on an athletic springboard and platform diving scholarship at Pennsylvania State University.
“The left is a bigger deal from a very old college diving injury. I was doing a reverse one-and-a-half [dive] and hit the board, shattering toes and joints,” Spencer explained.
The Nightline correspondent expressed gratitude for the medical advancements made since her college years and thanked her doctor at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.
“Back then they said there was nothing you could do except tape it, let it heal, and live with the pain,” she concluded her post.”Today there are much better options, thanks to surgeons like Dr Marty O’Malley at HSS. These boots were made for walkin.”
Fans and friends took to the comment section to send Spencer their well wishes.
Former ABC Chief Medical Correspondent, Dr. Jennifer Ashton, commended Spencer’s strength.
“Jesus!!! Who does both feet at the same time???? My girl, that’s who!” she wrote. “So tough! Sending u speedy love to fast recovery! We’ve got dancin to d
“Omggggoshhhh thinking & praying for your quick recovery & ❤️🩹 healing… HSS is AMAZING!!! Sending love & prayers!!!!” a fan commented.
“Amazing the advances they have made… heal quickly,” another user posted.
