Chris Evans Returns as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday

Chris Evans is suiting up for his return as Captain America in a new Marvel film.

After seemingly retiring from the role in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, reports say the actor is coming back for Avengers: Doomsday, which has a planned release day of 1 May, 2026.

“After appearing in Deadpool & Wolverine, Chris Evans is dipping back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe once again for Avengers: Doomsday,” confirms THR.

Marvel is aligning all of the features that made Avengers: Endgame the second highest-grossing film in history ($2.799 billion, just behind Avatar‘s $2.923 billion). The first of which are directors the Russo brothers, who helmed both Avengers: Endgame and its 2018 predecessor, Avengers: Infinity War. They directed Evans in four films.

Robert Downey Jr. also returns, although not as Captain America’s ally Iron Man, but as the primary antagonist of the piece, Doctor Doom. Given the villainous switch-up it’s unclear at this point what Evans role is, if he’s even playing Captain America at all.

After all, the actor made a cameo as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in Deadpool and Wolverine, harking back to his earlier role in two Fantastic Four movies in 2005 and 2007.

Evans played Captain America/Steve Rogers in 11 Marvel Cinematic Universe titles between 2011 and 2019, debuting with Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), and appearing in The Avengers (2012), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016) Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Endgame. He had cameos in Thor: The Dark World (2013) and Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).

The last time we saw him was in the final scene of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, where he travelled back to the past to relive his life – only this time with his love interest Peggy Carter (Hailey Atwell).

The next time we see Captain America, he’ll be played by Rogers’ friend Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) in Captain America: Brave New World, which releases 14 February 2025.
