Hollywood Legend Dick Van Dyke, 97, Makes Triumphant Return to TV in ‘Days of Our Lives

At 97, comedy legend Dick Van Dyke refuses to let age slow him down, diving into a fresh acting gig on “Days of Our Lives.” His role as an elderly man dealing with amnesia marks a departure from his usual comedic parts.

Speaking with Access Hollywood, Van Dyke explained the uniqueness of this role: “I’ve portrayed old men in comedy before, but this time, it’s just me at 97.” His excitement for this distinctive character shines through his words.

During a chance encounter at their gym, Dick Van Dyke, famed for his comedic talents, jokingly prodded Drake Hogestyn, who plays John Black on the show, about roles for older actors. This playful banter unexpectedly turned into an offer for a part.

Van Dyke shared, “I’d tease him, saying, ‘Don’t you ever cast older folks? Give me a shot!’ Surprisingly, he did. He got me a role.” Their friendly exchange paved the way for this thrilling opportunity.

To get ready for his part, Van Dyke delved deep into the vast legacy of “Days of Our Lives,” binge-watching numerous episodes across its 58 seasons. He also turned to friends in the industry familiar with soap operas, like Carol Burnett, who sent him advice stressing the need to know lines impeccably due to the filming’s no-retake
