Toby Keith recently passed away, leaving his wife of over three decades and their three children behind. The music star died after a long battle with a disease.
On February 6, 2024, singer-songwriter Toby Keith’s family revealed on his Instagram account that he had died. They shared a photograph of the star posing with a cowboy hat along with the post.
“Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on February 5th, surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage,” the message read. Keith, who was 62, had been battling cancer in recent years. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer in late 2021 and opened up about the disease in a November 2023 interview.
The Oklahoma native was asked whether he felt scared after being diagnosed, and he said he was. He compared cancer to an island, saying, “[…] Everybody rides around – they know it’s there, but they go to other islands. They stay away from it.”
Keith explained that boats would be all over once one crashed on the island, “Then you find our half of the world is inflicted with active cancer, and you go […] ‘Holy cow, they’ve been working on this for centuries, and they haven’t got this puzzle put together yet.'” He had just lost an acquaintance when he discovered he had cancer.
They had played golf for three days, and two weeks later, their mutual friend told him the acquaintance had only two weeks to live. He sadly died ten days later.
A month later, Keith got diagnosed with cancer, and another month later, his son’s fiancée, who does not have a dad, asked if he would walk her down the aisle at the wedding. “I’m going, ‘If I’m like the last guy, I ain’t gonna make it,'” Keith admitted.
By 2023, he was no longer afraid of cancer. When asked how he felt at the time, the record producer answered, “I feel great today. It takes a while.” He explained that he had reached a point where he was finally comfortable with the disease and that everything was okay. Keith further expressed:
“I’m not gonna let this define the rest of my life. If I live to be 100 or I don’t, I’m going to go forward. I’m feeling good and I’m off of chemo and I’m rolling. We’re just going business as usual, going forward.”
Weeks before his death, Keith got candid about his struggle while referencing his hit song, “Don’t Let The Old Man In,” which Clint Eastwood used in “The Mule.” Keith shared his favorite line from the song: “My body’s weathered and worn. Ask yourself how would you be, if you didn’t know the day you were born.”
When the Hall of Famer performed the song live, his wife, Tricia Lucus, was seen being emotional. When asked what she meant to him during an interview, Keith said she was the best nurse who took charge once they set foot in the hospital following his diagnosis.
The couple wed on March 24, 1984, and welcomed three children, two daughters, Shelley and Krystal, and one son Stelen. They had been married for 39 years until Keith’s tragic death.
The actor, who had starred with Kelly Preston and Burt Reynolds in “Broken Bridges,” adored his loved ones. His family had been there for him during his battle with cancer and remained instrumental in his journey.
Keith battled cancer at his 8,500-square-foot home in Nashville, which he built from the ground up. He also owned 40 Thoroughbred racehorses and a 160-acre farm outside Oklahoma City.
