Minnie Driver Shares What She Would Tell Her 25-Year-Old Self After Matt Damon ‘Heartbreak’
|Minnie Driver is revealing what she wishes she could tell her 25-year-old self following her Matt Damon “heartbreak.”
Speaking on Thursday’s episode of The Jennifer Hudson Show, Driver, 54, opened up about the emotional period following her split from Damon, 53, in 1998.
Host Hudson, 42, noted that “it made a lot of headlines” after Driver commented on her sad expression when Instagram account Movie Shmood shared on a throwback clip of Damon and Ben Affleck winning Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting at the Oscars in 1998.
\”I wish I could have told her, ‘Honey it’s cool, you can celebrate and life’s gonna be great and beautiful and hard and amazing,’ ” Driver said as she revealed what she would tell her 25-year-old self. “\’You’re going to love again, it’ll be fine.’ ”
The video, which was posted in October, featured the then-25-year-old actress’ sad reaction as Damon and Affleck gave their acceptance speech. \”My face 😂😂😂😂❤️,\” wrote Driver in the comments section.
She also responded to a fan who wrote, \”Minnie looks so sad,\” and revealed that she looked upset because Damon had “ended our relationship a few weeks before” and “was at the Oscars with his new gf.\” \”I was devastated,\” continued Driver, who starred as Skylar in Good Will Hunting. \”Wish I could have celebrated more as it was an amazing moment for all of us, and for this wonderful film!\”
Looking at the picture of her expression during the Oscar moment on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Driver noted to Hudson, “My little face,” adding that she wanted “to wrap my arms around that young woman and hug her and go, ‘It’s all going to be fine honey, don’t worry.’ ”
“We’d recently broken up, I was nominated, he was nominated,” the star — who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress — explained. “He had a new girlfriend, I was totally heartbroken.”
She added, “I think it’s like anyone who’s been heartbroken can understand, it’s like the last thing you want is everybody having a window in on that and it was so public.”
\”So when I commented, it was just I saw the clip, I hadn’t seen the clip,” the Beekeeper star continued. “I don’t know that I’ve ever seen it. I’d never seen my face. The reaction when they won and they cut to me because there was a camera right in the face of the poor young 25-year-old girl, who’s about to burst into tears.”
Driver and Damon met while filming the movie in 1997 and dated for a year until their split shortly before awards season.
