Oppenheimer actor Emma Dumont announced to the public that they identify as “transmasculine non-binary” and prefer the pronouns they and them. The information became apparent when they updated their Instagram bio on Thursday, December 5. Although their Instagram handle is still @Emmadumont, the nickname on the profile now reads “Nick Dumont.”

A rep for the 30-year-old actor, who played Jackie Oppenheimer in the Oscar-winning film, explained to TMZ that “their work name is still going to be Emma Dumont, but they will go by Nick with friends and family.”

“so happy for your nick!!!! you are loved!! 🖤,” wrote one fan. “Happy coming out!!! So exciting to get to be yourself,” wrote another. One fan skipped right past the gender announcement to try to get some Marvel spoilers. “ARE YOU going to appear in secret wars!!!??????” they asked, referring to the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe project that is rumored to feature the X-Men and seemingly wondering if Dumont’s character, Lorna Dane aka Polaris, would make an appearance.

A few of Dumont’s followers were critical or dismissive in the comments, but many others encouraged them to ignore any negativity. “You look cool here Emma! Don’t listen to the Haters :),” wrote one supporter of the T@gged actor.

Per Healthline, “‘transmasculine’ is an umbrella term that refers to people who were assigned female at birth but identify with masculinity. It’s often abbreviated as ‘transmasc.'”

Dumont has not made any official public statements about their gender identity, but has been more active on social media since debuting their new short haircut on August 28.
