Suga Free Credits Kendrick, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg With Reviving West Coast Hip-Hop

Suga Free is the latest Hip-Hop artist to offer their thoughts about the ongoing resurgence of West Coast Hip-Hop.

The Bay Area native recently took the time to credit a handful of acts that have been active participants in releasing new music this year, including Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg.

During an interview with AzWayTooActive, Suga Free commended the new life that’s been breathed into the coastal Hip-Hop scene, which has been a major talking point amongst music fans in recent months.

“Look at the turn it’s taking,” the 54-year-old said of the heightened buzz surrounding artists from the West. “Look at Kendrick Lamar. You know what I mean? Look at Xzibit. Look at Snoopy [Snoop Dogg]. Look at Dre [Dr. Dre]. I mean, the West Coast got the ball.”

Suga Free added that the uptick in popularity of West Coast rap artists is simply a natural, timely changing of the tide, as other regions have taken a backseat after having garnered more attention by comparison in previous years.

“Like they say, everybody get a turn,” the renowned game-spitter noted.

Suga Free’s comments arrive as multiple high-profile albums from some of the West Coast’s biggest names have been released and announced in recent months.

In late November, Kendrick Lamar unleashed his latest project, GNX, without any prior promotion or announcement, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and became the most streamed Hip-Hop album of the entire year.

In addition, comeback albums like Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre’s forthcoming Missionary album, as well as Xzibit’s upcoming release, Kingmaker, have added to the excitement surrounding West Coast rap acts.
